CCM: New improved cucumber varieties in Shanghai 04-15-2016

The planting area of cucumber is annually decreasing in Shanghai. In 2014, there was an area around 2,364.5 ha (35,468 mu) used to plant cucumbers with multiple varieties (about 50 cultivars annually), but the main cultivars was very limited. Shenqing1 had the biggest planting area, followed by Biyu2, and another 3 cultivars (Jinyan4, Nanza2 and Ruiqing) respectively.

 

1. Cucumber varieties in Shanghai

 

  • Multiple varieties with limited main varieties
  • Distribution of varieties is uneven
  • Varieties tend to be diversified

 

2. Recommendation of new improved varieties

 

(1) Cucumber cultivars of South China type

  • Shenqing1 (bred by Shanghai Funong Seed Co., Ltd.)
  • Baoke1 (bred by the Vegetable Sciences and Techniques Extension Station of Baoshan District, Shanghai
  • Huza6 (bred by the Horticulture Research Institute of Shanghai Academy of Agriculture Sciences)

 

(2) Cucumber cultivars of North China type

  • Jinyan4 (bred by Tianjin Kernel Cucumber Research Institute, the main cucumber cultivar for summer and autumn rearing in Shanghai, and warm-welcomed by vegetable farmers and consumers because of its aesthetic appearance and high quality)
  • Jingyou12 (bred by Tianjin Kernel Cucumber Research Institute)


 


(3) Cucumber cultivars of European fruit type

  • Biyu2 (bred by Shanghai Funong Seed Co., Ltd.)
  • Biyu5 (bred by Shanghai Funong Seed Co., Ltd.)
  • Shenlyu03 (bred by School of Agriculture and Biology of Shanghai Jiaotong University)
  • Chunqiuwang (bred by the Horticulture Research Institute of Shanghai Academy of Agriculture Sciences)

 

(4) Other cucumber varieties with specialized end-uses

  • Jieyang Snakegourd (a local cultivar of Jieyang City, Guangdong Province, and mainly bred as mature cucumber)
  • Yixiuliangguo (a fresh fruit-type cucumber cultivar, introduced from Japan by Shanghai Huihe Seed Co., Ltd.)
  • Meilyu1 (an over-summering cucumber cultivar with resistance to hot weather and dilute thorns, introduced from Japan by Shanghai Huihe Seed Co., Ltd.)
